In 2018, Nigeria lost Elizabeth Ochanya Ogbanje, a 13-year-old schoolgirl from Benue State whose only dream was to get an education. Instead, she became the face of one of Nigeria’s most painful cases of child sexual abuse. Living with her aunt and uncle ,a lecturer at Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo , was supposed to give her better schooling. But behind those walls, she faced years of sexual assault allegedly from the lecturer, Andrew Ogbuja, and his son, Victor. The abuse left her with vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) , a condition rare in children , and led to her death on October 17, 2018. Now, years later, her name is trending again, as Nigerians revisit her story and the justice that still feels unfinished.
